Dragon Ball Z Kai: Part One Review

Dragon Ball Z Kai: Part One Feature

  • DRAGON BALL KAI - VOLUME 1 (DVD)
When manga artist Akira Toriyama began Dragon Ball in Shonen Jump in 1984, he launched one of the most successful franchises in anime history. The second TV series, Dragon Ball Z (1989), which recounts the heroic adventures of Goku, Gohan, and the Z-Fighters, remains the most popular iteration. For Dragon Ball Z Kai (2009), the 291-episode saga has been recut and trimmed to 99 episodes, eliminating some of the subplots and streamlining the main story arcs. The visuals have been cleaned and reformatted for wider screens. The dialogue has been re-recorded in a new, more accurate translation, with several of the key voice actors reprising their roles: Sean Schemmel (Goku), Christopher R. Sabat (Vegeta, Piccolo), Mike McFarland (Master Roshi), and Sonny Strait (Krillin). The first 13 episodes comprise most of the original first season: The evil Raditz arrives and informs Goku they are both Saiyan warriors from the planet Vegeta. Goku destroys Raditz with the help of Piccolo but dies in the process. He moves to the Other World to train with King Kai, knowing he'll eventually be brought back to life with the magical Dragon Balls. Piccolo trains Goku's son Gohan, anticipating arrival of the remaining Saiyans. Goku returns in time for that confrontation, and the set ends during his climactic battle with Saiyan Prince Vegeta. Dragon Ball Z Kai seems to be aimed at younger viewers who don't have the patience for the rambling pace of the original series. The duel between Goku and the villainous Frieza in season 3 dragged on for more than 20 episodes of recycled footage. Kai feels faster, funnier, and more exciting, with more action and less nattering. Hard-core otaku will want to keep their sets of all nine seasons of Dragon Ball Z. But novices, especially the 8- to 14-year-old boys who have always been the series' core fans, will prefer the livelier Dragon Ball Z Kai. (Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 8 and older: violence; minor risqué and toilet humor, ethnic stereotyping and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon The Legendary Z Reborn!

For the first time in history, experience the legendary Z as the master intended: bigger, faster, stronger, and packed with the pulverizing power to blow your puny minds! Beef up your collection with this manga-centric, fresh take on Akira Toriyama’s original vision, featuring more action than you can handle, revitalized animation, and an amped-up audio experience that will make your ears beg for mercy!

The last descendants of an evil race of warriors known as the Saiyans are on a collision course with Earth, and Goku – the strongest fighter on the planet – is all that stands between humanity and extinction. To save his friends and the world he loves, Goku must travel to a realm from which few return, but should he survive, he’ll discover the power to face the villainous Saiyan warlord – Prince Vegeta.

Disc 3 features the best of Looney Tunes directed by Bob Cl
The fifth collection of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies continues Warner Bros.' scattershot approach, mixing classics and obscurities. Among the best-known and funniest cartoons are "Ali Baba Bunny" (Daffy yelling, "I'm rich! I'm socially secure!"), "Bewitched Bunny" (Witch Hazel galloping off in a cloud of hair pins), and "Buccaneer Bunny" (a sterling example of one of director Friz Freleng's favorite gags: having the characters run up and down stairs and in and out of various doors). "Gold Diggers of '49" and "Little Red Walking Hood" show Tex Avery beginning to explore the self-reflexive gags that would be become one of the hallmarks of his mature style. In "Walking Hood," Grandma stops the action to answer the phone and place her order with the grocer--including a case of gin. "The Daffy Doc" is Bob Clampett at his most surreal, with Daffy and Porky getting sucked into an iron lung, bulging and shrinking like balloon animals. Some of the earliest cartoons predate the adoption of "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" as the theme song for the Warner Bros. cartoons. Many shorts from the early '30s were built around songs from Warner's musicals: "I've Got to Sing a Torch Song" (written for Gold Diggers of 1933) features caricatures of Mae West, George Bernard Shaw, Benito Mussolini, and Bing Crosby frolicking to the title tune. Greta Garbo delivers the closing, "That's All, Folks!" Like the previous four sets, Golden Collection Volume 5 comes loaded with extras that range from three WWII films in which Mr. Hook urges sailors to buy war bonds to "Extremes and In-Betweens: A Life in Animation" (2000), a documentary about Oscar-winning director Chuck Jones. Many of these cartoons will have viewers of all ages in stitches. (Unrated, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence, ethnic stereotypes, mild risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon More Looney Tunes...your wish is our command. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets [Blu-ray] Review

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets [Blu-ray] Feature

  • The next installment in the Harry Potter series finds young wizard Harry Potter (DANIEL RADCLIFFE) and his friends Ron Weasley (RUPERT GRINT) and Hermione Granger (EMMA WATSON) facing new challenges during their second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as they try to uncover a dark force that is terrorizing the school. Format: BLU-RAY DISC Genre: SCI-FI/FANTASY Rating:
First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon The next installment in the Harry Potter series finds young wizard Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and his friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) facing new challenges during their second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as they try to uncover a dark force that is terrorizing the school.

Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers Review

Life goes on for handsome 19-year-old Stony de Coco of The Bronx. Girls and dancing in the evening. A union job with good pay in the day. But what Stony (Richard Gere) doesn't know is where his life is going.
Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) directs a tough yet tender slice-of-life rich in great characters, deep feelings and performances crystallizing the love/hate duality of family life. Stony loves his younger brother (Michael Hershewe), but can't stop his unbalanced mother (Lelia Goldoni) from terrorizing the boy into illness. He's started to explore life's possibilities, but hasn't the heart to reject the career his aggressive father (Tony Lo Bianco) wants for him. Paul Sorvino plays an uncle who loves Stony like a son. And Marilu Henner is an understanding pal encouraging Stony to take a stand. Once he does, Stony's triumph is ours.

Miracle in Lane 2 Review

Miracle in Lane 2 Feature

  • Sensational Frankie Muniz (TV's MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE) stars as Justin Yoder in MIRACLE IN LANE 2, inspired by the true story of a mischievous and courageous 12-year-old who refused to let a physical challenge defeat him. His unrelenting desire to win a trophy leads to Justin's discovery that it's perseverance that makes a winner, as he prepares for a national soapbox championship race
Based on the real-life story of disabled soap box derby champion Justin Yoder, this Disney bio-pic manages the difficult trick of balancing earnestness with wit, action with family drama. Frankie Muniz (TV's Malcolm in the Middle) plays Justin, a 12-year-old who accepts the limitations of his spina bifida but still wants to win a trophy like his athlete brother. Rick Rossovich and Molly Hagan are note perfect as his thoroughly likable but flawed parents, and Patrick Levis deftly portrays the difficulties of being a loving older brother who gets fed up always having to play second fiddle to his brother and his disease. Frequent trips into Justin's avid imagination, which provide humor and context, help the film avoid the sentimentality that usually accompanies triumph-over-adversity movies. (For instance, God is a race car driver who wears a T-shirt proclaiming "I don't make mistakes.") The smart script is cheerfully candid about Justin's problems (such as vomiting and lack of bladder control) and honest about the strain a disability puts on a family, but it's packed with enough action to sate the sports-minded viewer. (Ages 6 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs Sensational Frankie Muniz (TV's MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE) stars as Justin Yoder in MIRACLE IN LANE 2, inspired by the true story of a mischievous and courageous 12-year-old who refused to let a physical challenge defeat him. Fresh, funny, full of action and heart, MIRACLE IN LANE 2 combines courage, challenges, and thrills for the ride of a lifetime!

How could a political party as fundamentally evil and overtly racist as the Nazis come to power? This remains one of the most enigmatic questions of the last century. Acclaimed historian Laurence Rees examines what led a cultured nation at the heart of Europe to commit the atrocities it did. In so doing, he exposes popular myths and encourages understanding of the real forces that led to one of the darkest chapters in modern history. Was it simply the hypnotic power of Hitler's rhetoric? Did the Gestapo really impose themselves by terror on an unwilling population? Through interviews with witnesses and perpetrators, along with archive film and records, this six-part series unveils a more chilling reality.
